Everyday habits, for every piece

  • On last, off first. Put jewelry on after perfume, lotion and sunscreen, and take it off before you wash your face.
  • Take it off for pools and hot tubs, the gym, cleaning with household products, and sleep.
  • Wipe before you put it away with a soft cotton cloth.
  • One piece per pouch, so chains don't tangle and pieces don't scratch each other.

14k gold filled

Gold filled pieces carry a thick layer of 14k gold bonded to a core metal, so with care the color lasts for years.

  • Water is fine now and then, but rinse in fresh water after the sea or a sweaty day and dry fully.
  • Keep it away from chlorine, which dulls gold.
  • If it looks dull, clean it with warm water and mild soap (see Cleaning).

Waterproof gold (PVD)

These pieces are made for water, sweat and everyday wear.

  • Rinse after salt water or chlorine and pat dry.
  • Skip polishing cloths, creams and abrasive scrubs: they can wear the finish.

Sterling silver

Silver naturally darkens with air over time. It is normal, and wearing it often keeps it brighter.

  • Polish with a silver polishing cloth when it darkens.
  • Store it in its pouch to slow darkening.

Pearls

Pearls are organic and softer than metal, so they need the gentlest care.

  • Put pearls on last, after perfume and hairspray.
  • Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wearing. Never soak them.
  • Keep them away from ultrasonic cleaners and chemicals.
  • Store them on their own so harder pieces can't scratch them.

Cleaning (metal only, not pearls)

  1. Mix a drop of mild dish soap into a bowl of warm water.
  2. Soak the piece for about 3 minutes.
  3. Brush gently with a very soft toothbrush, getting into links and settings.
  4. Rinse in warm running water.
  5. Dry with a soft cotton cloth, then let it air dry fully before storing.

Storing

Keep each piece clean, fully dry and in its own pouch, somewhere cool and dry. A closed box or drawer keeps silver brighter for longer.
